Privacy
4.2

Betternet VPN provides OpenVPN and IPSec encryption protocols. However, the encryption type is generally unknown.

The provider doesn’t keep any usage log but does maintain metadata/connections logs. Furthermore, it should be noted that Canada is a registered member of the Five Eyes spying alliance which means data can be shared between the members (Canada, USA, Australia, UK, and New Zealand). this coupled with the fact that they work with third parties and other partners, is a minus to the caliber of the privacy provided by Betternet VPN.

Privacy - highlights
  • Based in Canada
  • Sponsored by third-parties
Privacy - Conclusions
The encryption type that is used is unknown.
Features
6.7

BetterNet VPN has no bandwidth restrictions. There are less that 50 servers in 10 different locations with only two (UK and US) to select from. Worse though is the unavailability of a list of the exact server location. If you are looking for a VPN to unlock geo blocked sites or even access different locations you will find Betternet to be truly lacking. However, since this is a free VPN and you do not have to set up an account with them, it means you can simultaneously connects as many devices as you want.

Although Betternet is a free VPN, it permits P2P downloading. It's one of the free VPNs to allow this, this is done because they believe the hassle of negotiating with the DMCA notices and other copyright harrasments is not worth the trouble. Additionally, Torrenting on Betternet VPN is an incredible proposition and stands out as the main draw for this VPN.

Features - highlights
  • Unlimited data
  • P2P/Torrenting allowed
  • Limited server locations
Features - Conclusions
Has limited locations available, but permits P2P downloading.

Support
2.3

Betternet VPN has a number of available support options for its clients, including knowledgebase and a FAQ section. However, it's suprising that the FAQ page seems to be largely uninformative whereas it requires extensive research to access information from the knowledge base. The provider can also be contacted directly by sending a ticketed request to their knowledge center.

There is no live chat and no email address is listed, which means that if you experience any problem with this VPN, you will not get the issue resolved quickly.

Support - highlights
  • No live chat
  • No email support
Support - Conclusions
Nor live chat, nor email support is available and the FAQ page seems to be largely uninformative.
