General overview

HideMyAss is a VPN service provider which is famous not only for a witty brand name and a grin inducing design of their website and applications. Also, it has one of the biggest lists of VPN servers available.

HideMyAss is a simple, yet fully functional VPN service. It has a premium price range, but is really fun to use thanks to the sleek design. Privacy is not its strongest advantage, though the large geographical variety of servers and the simplicity of usage for many might be a more important factor to choose HMA as their VPN provider.

Overview - conclusion
HMA has an extensive list of server locations situated all around the world, great for accessing geo-blocked content and restricted websites.

All three major protocols are supported by HideMyAss - OpenVPN, L2TP and PTPP. The default protocol for Windows/OS X application is OpenVPN-UDP (also called "Auto-Path"). By analyzing HMA protocols we discovered a drawback - there is no configuration available for the desktop application. This applies not only to the protocol selection, but for any other settings as well. What you see in the UI is more or less all that you get in the terms of VPN configuration.

Regarding customer privacy, HMA states that they collect a time stamp when you connect and disconnect to the VPN services and the amount of data transmitted. Also, HMA collects IP addresses that are used (to where and from where you connect).

Privacy - highlights
  • Three major protocols supported
  • Connection logs
  • No option change
Privacy - Conclusions
The privacy policy and the encryption could definitely be better.
Speed & Performance

The results were 15 Mbps download speed and 8 Mbps upload speed. So around 16% of the standard speed, though we did not notice a sharp decrease on standard web browsing experience while using it.

When you search for a VPN, fast speed is an extremely important factor. You want your streaming services to work well and without annoying buffering and your browsing experience to be smooth. Moreover, it is known that in general, Internet speed drops when using a VPN, so it's important to try and find a VPN that still offers good speed even when using VPN services. We check the speed when connecting from the US to the UK, as it's half across the globe. It is a big distance, so keep in mind that closer locations may provide better speed and latency.

Internet speed without a VPN shows your general Internet Service Provider download and upload speed. On the other hand, it is known that you lose speed when using a VPN service. So be sure to take into consideration if your speed drops too much.

Speed - highlights
  • No sharp speed decrease
Speed - Conclusions
The speed drops a bit, but it doesn't ruin your browsing experience.

HMA offers apps for all major platforms - Windows, OS X, iOS and Android. You can say that it is a pretty standard set.

Though what we wanted to point out with the screenshot is the design difference. The selling part of the website is really well designed while some of the other sections are not. Not to mention, the amount of options to configure and edit is nearly null, except the username, password and some of the subscription details.

Apps - highlights
  • Covers major platforms
  • No configuration
Apps - Conclusions
HMA covers all of the major platforms, but the interface is rigid and not changeable, there is no app configuration.

Upon arriving to customer support section, you'll discover several drawings that are sure to make you smile. Nice design is really appreciated! Besides that, HideMyAss shares a pretty standard set of support options - tutorials as well as a ticket form.

HMA also provides live chat support. We have used it once asking for a refund, and it was indeed quick and polite, it felt like we were talking with someone who actually cares.

Eventually, you will run into a problem - payment method not working, servers not connecting, pretty much anything can happen. That's where support comes through - many different customer support options mean that there are multiple ways to contact the support and get help from a professional.

Support - highlights
  • Standard support options
  • Tutorials and FAQs available
  • Quick replies
Support - Conclusions
HMA's customer support is quick and also offers multiple troubleshooting guides, setup tutorials and more.
Value for money

HideMyAss, as most of our reviewed VPN providers, has three plans based on subscription duration: 1 month, 6 month and 12 months. However, it can be said all of the offered plans are quite pricey when compared to what some of the other premium VPN providers offer for less.

Whilst the 12-month subscription gives you a 45% discount, the $5.99/month is already a decent price. All plans provide a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Value for money - highlights
  • 30 day money back guarantee
  • Subscription plans are quite pricey
Value for money - Conclusions
Pricey plans compared to some other VPN service providers and what they offer.
