General overview

TorGuard brand etymology is derived from "Torrent", not "Tor anonymity network". It has no relation to Tor anonymity network, but it does have a no-log policy which makes it a decent VPN provider for torrenting as well as P2P file-sharing. TorGuard also has some additional features which include proxy service or secure email server and makes it really an interesting alternative to most of the competitors.

Privacy
7.0

Torguard's website claims: Personal information will not be sold or otherwise transferred to our business partners without your prior consent, except that we will disclose the information we collect to third parties when, in our good faith judgment, we are obligated to do so under applicable laws. On the other hand, in the information provided to torrentfreak.net, TorGuard explains: If a court order is received, it is first handled by our legal team and examined for validity in our jurisdiction. Should it be deemed valid, our legal representation would be forced to further explain the nature of a shared IP configuration and the fact that we do not hold any identifying logs.

So, it turns out that even technically, due to the several users sharing same IP addresses at the same moment, it is impossible for TorGuard themselves to match the IP address to a specific user account. Though TorGuard headquarters are based in the United States, which does pose some risks regarding privacy, overall TorGuard is a provider with lots of respect to user privacy. As for the connection protocol, TorGuard VPN made a bold decision by only allowing its customers to use OpenVPN protocol, which is both the fastest and the most secure one. It supports both TCP and UDP protocols as well as all standard encryption protocols - AES-256-CBC, AES-128-CBC and BF-CBC.

  • Strong encryption
  • Based in the US
Privacy - Conclusions
TorGuard offers strong encryption and uses OpenVPN as a default protocol.
Features
6.8

TorGuard notices its potential users before the sign up and sends a notice that there are no streaming dedicated IP addresses available in the USA servers at the moment. That is a respected action from a VPN provider. It is nice that they make sure that the consumers are not misinformed of the service that they are about to purchase.

Connection through TorGuard VPN reached up to 32 Mbps of download and 41 Mbps of upload speed – which is decent enough. There are no limits to the torrent traffic or any other type of traffic whatsoever. 50+ Countries and 1600+ VPN servers provide enough geographical coverage for the majority of users. Also, there are some more exotic locations such as Tunisia or Isle of Man for those not willing to use the US or European servers for some reason.

Features - highlights
  • Servers in more than 50 countries
  • No traffic limit
Features - Conclusions
Threre are more than 1600 servers available, server speed is good and there is no traffic or data limit.
Apps
6.0

TorGuard has an extensive platform support: Windows, OS X, Linux, Android, iOS, DD-WRT supported routers. Linux support shows not just TorGuard's commitment to the community, but the determination to make a fully-featured product.

We have tested the OS X application and it worked flawlessly all throughout the testing period. Though the application was fully functional, there are definitely some areas for improvements. Choosing servers from a map, extensive user account management - all of these would be nice to have. Also, the design could definitely be improved as well.

Apps - highlights
  • Extensive platform support
Apps - Conclusions
TorGuard has a wide range of supported platforms like Linux, iOS, Windows and more.
Support

Upon spending several minutes on their website, you get greeted by a customer support agent suggesting help. All the questions we asked were responded in a professional and customer focused manner.

Besides the chat option, TorGuard also has a knowledge base, video guides, community forums as well as email support. Though live chat support comes in handy in most of the cases, those preferring to do self-research will find those additional support options very useful. One thing we missed was the search function in the knowledge base. Whenever we wanted to research some cases ourselves, we just googled it and ended up on TorGuard's blog post which covered the topic extensively. So, it can be said that their blog is another useful source of support material.

Support - highlights
  • Video guides
  • Various customer support options
Support - Conclusions
TorGuard has tons of different support options: live chat, video guides, email support and other.
Value for money

Unlike most other VPN providers who showcase the perks (usually discounts) urging to sign up for longer duration, TorGuard VPN offers to choose from one of its products - Proxy, VPN, Email as well as a VPN+Proxy bundle. The price of the VPN-only offer is $9.99, which is pretty much the standard of premium quality VPN providers. We would recommend investing additional $1.5/month for the SOCKS5 proxy - it is a great fallback option in case the VPN service malfunctions temporarily. Besides, you could set it up to be constantly used for torrent downloads and use VPN only once you have specific needs.

Payment options include all the major credit cards as well PayPal. Cryptocurrencies are available as well and it is another privacy ensuring feature.
